Following Your Passion

My life is not what I thought it would be at this point.

That statement hit me hard a few weeks ago. If I went back to the 8 or 9 year old me I seriously doubt I would have said, “I want to be in my thirties trying to figure things out.” But, that’s where I am.

Following your passions is not for the faint at heart. It takes courage, guts, determination, and patience. To be a playwright, I sacrificed a lot to follow my heart’s desires…and it hasn’t been easy.

In 2014, I packed up my car and with no job or permanent place to live, I left my hometown and moved to Atlanta to pursue playwriting and producing. Really pursue it. While that was the hardest thing for my Type A self to do, it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Many doors and opportunities opened up when I moved to Atlanta. I was accepted into an apprenticeship program which stretched and pulled me, making me a better writer. It also afforded me the ability to meet some great and influential people. But I had to jump. I had to take the leap and see what would happen. Honestly, that scared the hell out of me. But, if it didn't, it may not have been right. If I stayed in my comfort zone, I wouldn't be pushed to be better.

I’m grateful for my journey. I am not where I thought I would be at this point in my life, but I’m happy with how things turned out.

“If you can’t figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. For your passion will lead you right into your purpose.” —Bishop T.D. Jakes
